Spotify for Artists (S4A) is a new platform within Spotify that gives artists tools and data to help develop and tap into their fan base. Our friends at Gus brought us in to partner in creating the S4A Fan Study, the first creative expression of the new platform. It would be a single-serve microsite, presenting a series of high-level insights to showcase how artists can develop their fan bases and achieve their goals.

We had to create a design system that had the potential to scale. Since data was at the core of the study, we had to balance stunning, eye-catching designs with clear data visualizations. It had to be immediately legible, but with a deep layer of data backing up each high level insight. We created iconic, graphic forms that alluded to the meaning behind each one, with an elegant particle system to hint at the individual data points underpinning these learnings.

It was important to develop an identity for S4A Fan Study that felt connected to, but not limited by, the existing Spotify brand. We used the Circular family to maintain that connection, as well as the convention of two-tone color treatments. We chose bold colors to denote the different Fan Study section categories and developed a family of abstracted 3d forms to suggest without being literal.
